MARSHVILLE, NC – Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) joined dozens of other community volunteers to participate in Read Across America at Marshville Elementary School on Friday. Kissell read “Bark, George,” to the second grade class of Linda Davis.
“As a former classroom teacher and an avid reader, I was thrilled to participate in Read Across America at Marshville Elementary,” Kissell said. “It is obvious that Principal Tom Childers and his faculty and staff are doing a remarkable job with these children. The excitement for learning and respect for other people was on display with every student I saw. It was an honor for me to be part of this event.”
After reading, Kissell told students that he wished for each of them to develop a love of reading, as well as speaking to them briefly about public service and the importance of a good education..
“With a book in your hands, you can travel the world, you can travel to another time, you can travel anywhere your imagination can take you,” Kissell said. “A love of reading will last you a lifetime.”
Davis and Childers thanked Kissell for participating in the event. Student India Middleton presented Kissell with a thank you card that had been signed by all the students in Mrs. Davis’ class. According to Childers, 31 volunteers participated in the event, enough for each class to have a reader during the course of the day.
"The community support for this event has been outstanding,” Childers said. “We are very pleased to have Congressman Kissell visit our school and read to our students. It was an honor to have him here.”
Read Across America is an annual event that takes place on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Schools across the country participate in the program aimed at motivating students to read. Read Across America, sponsored by the National Education Association, is in its 15th year.
