Rep. Kissell Joins Congressional Youth Council, Volunteers at Habitat for Humanity Build in Laurinburg

Rep. Kissell Joins Congressional Youth Council, Volunteers at Habitat for Humanity Build in LaurinburgLAURINBURG, NC – Representative Larry Kissell (NC-08) joined community members in Laurinburg on Saturday to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County.

Kissell assembled a team of volunteers who came together for a day of building and hard work that will ultimately result in the completion of a brand new home. Volunteers included members of Kissell’s Congressional Youth Council along with their parents, and members of his staff.

“I’m very proud to join my Congressional Youth Council and local volunteers at this Habitat for Humanity build,” said Kissell. “There are a lot of enthusiastic folks in Laurinburg who are ready to put in the work to build a better community for our neighbors. It’s great for the young folks to see how much of a difference they can make in just one day, leaving a lasting mark on the community and providing hope for people in need. I’m thankful for the parents, teachers, and Habitat for Humanity volunteers who have instilled in these young folks the importance of giving back.”

During the six-hour long build, Kissell and volunteers joined Investment Builders of Laurinburg to put up siding and work on the exterior of the handicap-accessible home. Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County Executive Director Susan Covington thanked Kissell and the volunteers for their hard work.

“We were so excited to have Congressman Kissell join us for the build,” said Covington. “We were impressed with the amount of people that he brought out to help and thrilled with the results the group was able to accomplish. It was an especially great opportunity for the youth who came out to have a hands-on volunteer experience. Everyone, including the Congressman, worked so hard and those are exactly the type of volunteers we need.”

Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County is a local affiliate of the international nonprofit of the same name that strives to eliminate poverty and homelessness by constructing basic housing for those in need. Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry that has helped to build more than 500,000 houses and given more than 2.5 million people a decent place to live.

“Every person and family deserves a safe place to live and a community in which they can belong,” Kissell added. “There is truly no better experience than putting in a hard day’s work to help provide a family with a place to call home. We’ve made great strides, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I strongly urge anyone who is able to consider volunteering a few hours of their time for this worthy cause.”
