CONCORD, NC - Yesterday, Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) was elected by Democratic members of Congress from North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and South Carolina to serve as Regional Whip for the 112thCongress. Kissell will serve as whip for Region 7, and serve as one of 24 Regional Whips representing 12 regions nationwide.
 
“It’s important to me that my district has the best representation they can, and I’m honored to be able to bring a moderate approach to a leadership position within the caucus,” said Kissell. “As the 112th Congress begins, it’s important that we work together to do all we can to improve the lives of American families. I look forward to this position, and will continue to work to make sure that the people of my district are heard loud and clear in Washington.”
 
As Regional Whip, Kissell will work closely with Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina’s 11thDistrict, who was elected as the region’s representative. Last month, Kissell seconded the nomination of Shuler in his bid for Minority Leader of the caucus against Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Kissell opposed Pelosi’s run for Minority Leader and will not vote for her as Speaker next Congress.
 
“I am thrilled that Rep. Kissell will help lead our party and our region on the Steering and Policy Committee,” said Shuler.  “He has a true common-sense understanding of what we need to do to get our country back on track.” 
 
Kissell and Shuler will begin their new roles when the 112th Congress convenes in January.
