Berkley Statement on Implementation of Temporary Relief for Nevadans Eligible for Deferred Action

Applications, Information Available at http://berkley.house.gov/

(August 15, 2012 -- Las Vegas)  Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today released the following statement upon implementation of temporary relief for Nevadans eligible for deferred action:

"I applaud the Obama Administration for keeping its word on implementing deferred action to give temporary relief to DREAM Act eligible Nevadans.  The DREAM Act is a common sense measure that would give young Nevadans brought to this country through no fault of their own, and who go to college or serve their country in the military, a path toward legal status.

"While today's implementation represents one step forward, we need a permanent solution.  I reiterate my call for Congress to pass the full DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform that secures the border, cracks down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and provides a pathway to legal status for those who go to the back of the line, learn English, pay a fine and back taxes and pass a criminal background check."

Background

Beginning August 15, 2012, certain young people who came to the United States as children, who do not present a risk to national security or public safety, and meet several other key guidelines, will be considered for relief from removal from the country or from being entered into removal proceedings.
