Berkley: Nevada to Receive $1 Million in Housing Aid For Homeless Veterans

(March 27, 2012 -- Washington, D.C)  Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today announced that Nevada will receive more than $1 million in federal funding for vouchers to aid homeless veterans in need of permanent housing.

"After putting their lives on the line in service to our nation, no Nevada veteran should face homelessness," said Berkley.  "This funding will help keep our promise to those who served in uniform by ensuring that these brave men and women can find permanent homes and never have to live on the streets."

Under the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH) program, Clark County will receive nearly $670,000 in funding and Washoe County will receive nearly $350,000 in financial aid to provide housing assistance vouchers for veterans so they can have a permanent home.  The program provides permanent housing with case management and other supportive services for homeless veterans across the country.

The grants announced today will support the housing needs of approximately 10,500 homeless veterans nationwide.  The HUD-VASH program includes both the rental assistance the voucher provides and comprehensive case management provided by VA staff.  Participating veterans rent privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent.
