Our nation is at a crossroads where we must fight to close the gap between energy demand and supply through increased domestic production and ambitious conservation efforts. We must adopt a responsible, comprehensive "all-of-the-above" approach to secure energy independence. Promoting energy independence will unleash American technological innovation, research and development, create jobs and strengthen our national security.
America needs to build a clean energy future based on renewable energy sources including wind, solar, biofuels and geothermal. America’s future economic prosperity will rely on an economy based on energy independence achieved by maximizing renewable energy technologies. American-made wind turbines, solar panels and homegrown next-generation biofuels will create the jobs of the future by harnessing the power of our research institutions and the American entrepreneurial spirit. The next breakthrough energy source could be anywhere, and America must foster an academic and economic environment where these sciences are able to thrive and harness these new sources.
America needs to responsibly maximize its existing energy resources such a natural gas, coal, and oil production while taking responsible steps to protect our water and air. Natural gas is a clean burning and abundant fuel and can power our trucking fleets and provide low carbon base load electricity. Coal currently provides 50% of America’s electricity, and we have abundant domestic resources, but we need to make our existing coal plants as efficient as possible utilizing cutting edge technology to save money and reduce emissions.
As a Member of Congress, I have worked hard to promote measures that will increase energy efficiency and incentivize Americans to make their homes and businesses more sustainable for the future. Promoting energy efficiency is the easiest, most immediate course to saving consumers and small businesses money, and it will create jobs that can’t be outsourced.
