In my first speech on the House floor, I spoke out about the need to cut spending.  However, Washington must lead by example, which is why I advocated for Congress to cut our own budgets first. Click the image above to watch.

We find our nation on a destructive and frightening course.  It's no secret that we cannot continue down this reckless trajectory.  We've kicked the can down the road for too long and now, there's no more road left. 

Our debt now exceeds $14 trillion.  The Congressional Budget Office estimates that by 2020, every American man, woman, and child will owe more than $72,000.  With more than 40 cents of every dollar the federal government spends coming from borrowed money and a 38 percent increase in the federal debt estimate in two years alone, we must start the process of getting our fiscal house in order now. 

Americans see the burden this massive deficit is already places on hardworking families and I intend to do everything in my power as your Representative voice in Congress to get us on the right track.  It will take tremendous effort and sacrifice, but our ultimate goal must be to leave our children and grandchildren with a fiscally sound and prosperous nation.

Now that the government is funded through the rest of the 2011 Fiscal Year (FY), we can turn our attention to the FY 2012 budget.  I welcome open and direct conversations on House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan’s (WI) FY 2012 budget proposal, which he released on April 5, 2011. Congressman Ryan’s plan cuts $6.2 trillion in spending from the President’s budget over the next 10 years, brings federal spending to below 20 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), saves Medicare now and for future generations and reduces federal deficits by $4.4 trillion.  Whereas President Obama’s budget proposal spends $3.8 trillion in a year and imposes $1.5 trillion in new taxes. 

The Republican budget will put our country on the road to a stable and more secure future that will result in a more efficient and effective government. The budget also tackles the much needed fundamental tax reform, including eliminating or modifying deductions, credits and special carve-outs that leave many companies paying no tax at all.  

In addition to paving a way for our nation get back on track toward economic security and prosperity, the Republican budget also addresses entitlement reform by saving and strengthening essential programs such as Medicare for today's seniors, and for our children and grandchildren.

Our nation's fiscal problems have been caused by decades of our leaders not being honest with us.  One political party is not solely responsible for this debt crisis.  However, the true test lays in our next step -- How we control spending and budget to ensure the fiscal soundness of this country for future generations to come.
