Jobs, Economy and Federal Spending
As you know, the federal government is facing extraordinary fiscal challenges. The combination of soaring government expenditures and a slow economy has contributed to an unprecedented debt crisis, culminating in the first downgrading of the U.S. credit rating. Over twelve percent of Southern Californians are currently unemployed, and many others have experienced reductions in hours or wages.
I understand the impact of a stagnant job market on my constituents and on hard-working Americans across the country, and am committed to working with my colleagues – on both sides of the aisle – to advance long-term, pro-growth policies that get our country back on track.
I support the following targeted solutions: simplify the tax code, lower the corporate tax rate, halt all job-killing regulatory proposals, reduce employer payroll taxes for newly-hired employees; make E-Verify - the only tool for employers to verify the legal status of potential employees - mandatory in all 50 states; and open global markets to American products.
As a former small business owner, I understand what it means to sign the front of a payroll check, and what that paycheck means to families. Putting Californians back to work remains a top priority.
Trade
Trade is a critical component of California’s economy and growth moving forward. One in seven jobs in California is related to trade and the state leads the nation in export-related jobs. I have worked hard to expand free trade agreements during my time in Congress.
With bipartisan support, Congress passed free trade agreements (FTAs) with Colombia, South Korea and Panama on October 12, 2011. The long-awaited passage of the three trade deals will help create thousands of jobs, level the global playing field for U.S. businesses, and lower consumption costs for American families. Of equal importance is what they will not do: burden the American taxpayer with one new dollar of deficit spending.
As your Representative in Congress, I will continue to work with my colleagues to reduce trade barriers to the U.S. economy.
