On November 9, Southern Company was ranked as the highest utility on G.I. Jobs’ Top 100 Military Friendly Employers listing for the sixth consecutive year. Several other Georgia companies were also listed, including Home Depot, Lockheed Martin and Norfolk Southern Corporation. In fact, 65 of the 100 companies have offices in Georgia.

G.I. Jobs evaluated companies based on a 100 question survey assessing their commitment to hiring veterans, policies for Reserve members called to active duty, and their participation in special recruitment military programs. With heightened criteria and standards each year, it is no surprise that only 2 percent of the 5,000 eligible companies made the top 100 list.

It is encouraging to see that Georgia companies are hiring so many of our brave service men and women. At Southern Company, veterans now make up 11 percent of the 26,000 person workforce. The Home Depot has hired more than 60,000 veterans since 2004, and Lockheed Martin boasts a workforce with more than 25,000 veterans. We look forward to seeing more veterans get back into the workforce and more veteran-friendly businesses calling Georgia home.
