Common Sense on Obtaining Veterans' Military Medals

Q: How can Senator Harkin help veterans or their families obtain military medals?

A: As a veteran myself, I know how significant medals are to veterans and their families. That is why I have worked to help hundreds of Iowa veterans receive the decorations they have earned.

To obtain lost, stolen or never received medals, send a letter to one of my state offices requesting that you be issued all your decorations. Your letter must include your full name, address, phone number, Social Security number, former service number (if you had one), VA claim number (if you have a VA claim), date and place of birth, and signature. A copy of your discharge papers (DD 214), which lists your awards, must be attached. When I receive this information, I will forward it to the appropriate agency along with a letter from myself requesting that you receive your medals.

Deceased veterans’ family members can also request medals if they identify themselves as next-of-kin and include the information listed above. Family members should remember to include their own signature and address.

Q. What if I do not have a DD 214?

A: You can obtain a DD 214 through a variety of sources. Check with your County Recorder's office to see if you filed your discharge papers there for tax purposes. If they don't have a copy, feel free to contact one of my state offices and a caseworker will discuss alternatives with you, including completing a "Request for Records" form that would be sent to the National Personnel Records Center.

Q: How long does it take to receive replacement medals?

A: In the past, due to backlogs and red tape at the Department of Defense, veterans were often forced to wait years to receive their commendations. That’s why in 1999, I sponsored legislation allocating funds for extra staff and resources to help eliminate the backlog and reduce the delays in issuing medals. While time varies due to the individual case, it now generally takes several months. If your request goes through my office, on average it takes about three to six months, depending on your branch of service.

Q: Who do I contact for help?

A: For help in obtaining military medals, contact any one of my Iowa offices located in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque and Sioux City. Des Moines Cedar Rapids 515/284-4574 319/365-4504 Davenport Dubuque Sioux City 563/322-1338 563/582-2130 712/252-1550.
