House GOP Votes, Again, to End Medicare Guarantee While Giving Away the Store to Millionaires

This afternoon, House Republicans voted 228-184 to end the Medicare guarantee…again. The GOP just used a “dream and pass” parliamentary procedure to pretend that both the House and Senate have passed their disastrous budget that lets Medicare wither on the vine while destroying jobs and giving away the store to millionaires:

The Hill – House to ‘deem’ approval of 2013 budget on Tuesday:

The House on Tuesday will pass a resolution that will deem the GOP-passed budget resolution as passed for the purpose of setting budget targets as members work on FY 2013 appropriations bills.

The so-called “deeming resolution” is included in a rule setting the terms of debate for a gun rights bill, H.R. 4089, which will also be debated on Tuesday.

And while Speaker John Boehner may have a memory lapse when it comes to his past convictions about the tactic…

Boehner said the [deem and pass] strategy was “one of the most outrageous things I have seen since I have been in Congress.” [Newsmax, 3/19/10]

…the facts about the Republican budget haven’t changed. It:

Ends the Medicare guarantee and shifts costs to seniors.

AARP: “By creating a ‘premium support’ system for future Medicare beneficiaries, the proposal is likely to simply increase costs for beneficiaries while removing Medicare’s promise of secure health coverage — a guarantee that future seniors have contributed to through a lifetime of hard work.”

The GOP budget was devastating for American families the first time they passed it, is devastating for American families today, and will be devastating for American families with whatever ploy House Republicans come up with tomorrow.
