Congressman Miller Visits Veterans in Reidsville – The Congressman shared a spaghetti lunch with veterans at VFW Post 8287 while they discussed legislation that impacts veterans' benefits. The Congressman took questions from the 96 veterans in attendance and talked about how his office can help obtain benefits and medals for veterans of the 13th District who have earned them. A highlight of the evening was a program initiated by the North Carolina Education Department that allows veterans of a certain age to receive an honorary High School Diploma if they left school to serve. Four diplomas were given out, including one to 97 year old Ralph Williams.

The 110th Congress has already enacted significant increases in veterans' health care funding – increasing it by $5.2 billion for 2007 in a down payment on meeting our veterans' needs. In fact, the 2007 veterans' health care funding bill exceeds the President's request by almost $4 billion; the largest increase in the history of the VA.

Historic Preservation Tour – Congressman Miller met with Rep. Nelson Cole; Mayor James Festerman; Tammy Spencer, Director of Economic Development; and other members of the Friends of Downtown Group at Café 99 in Reidsville to get an update on the progress of the revitalization of downtown. Because Reidsville was the home of American Tobacco, the economy of the town and area as a whole, has struggled.

63 Years Later, Brad Miller presents honors to distinguished Veteran - More than six decades after he was wounded in combat, the family of Robert C. Martin of Reidsville was by his side at a surprise ceremony as he was presented the prestigious medals he earned in World War II and never received. Congressman Brad Miller (NC-13) presented Mr. Martin with a number of military awards, including the World War II Victory Medal, and re-presented the Purple Heart in a ceremony at Dan River Wesleyan Church in Eden on Sunday, July 27th.

Mr. Martin's family had been working quietly with the Congressman's Greensboro office to surprise the veteran.

"Sixty-three years after his duty on the battlefield, we honor Mr. Martin's acts of bravery and his sacrifices on behalf of the United States," said Rep. Miller.

On February 21, 1945, as a young Private First Class, Mr. Martin was wounded in action, taking shrapnel in his right shoulder, while fighting against the enemy in the Asiatic Pacific theatre. Mr. Martin participated in the Marshall Island Operations, in the Mariana Islands Operation and in the capture and occupation of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands.
