E-ALERT: Cracking Down on Abusive Debt Collection in Hospitals

e-Alerts: 2012

Yesterday, I called on the Administration to launch a federal investigation into a debt collection company that has been going after patients waiting to be seen in the ER or while recuperating in a hospital bed (read the New York Times' story: In Congress, a Move to Look Into a Medical Debt Collector).

E-ALERT: Keeping Interest Rates Low on College Loans

e-Alerts: 2012

Today, I joined with other Democrats in the House to introduce important legislation, the Stop the Rate Hike Act, to prevent college students' loan rates from doubling on July 1st. We pay for this legislation by ending some of the egregious tax breaks currently in place for oil and gas companies.

E-ALERT: WORK Act Recognizes that ALL Moms are Working Moms

e-Alerts: 2012

It's time our federal laws recognize that all women who stay home to raise young children are, in fact, doing important and legitimate work -- regardless of their income. That is why I introduced the Women's Option to Raise Kids (WORK) Act, H.R. 4379, this week.

E-ALERT: President Signs STOCK Act into Law

e-Alerts: 2012

I'm pleased to report that President Obama signed the STOCK Act into law today, which improves ethics requirements and strengthens the ban on insider trading by Members of Congress, staff, and high ranking federal government employees. I voted for the STOCK Act when it came before the House. Among other things, it requires public disclosure of stock and securities transactions within 45 days, ensures that corrupt Members do not receive a pension, and bans bonuses for Fannie and Freddie Executives.

E-ALERT: Against the GOP Proposal & for the Progressive Proposal

e-Alerts: 2012

Over the last two days the House of Representatives has debated and voted on several versions of a budget.

I strongly opposed the Republican Majority's Budget, which has been called "austerity on steroids." Republicans' vision for America's future, as laid out in their proposal, means ending the Medicare guarantee, cutting Social Security benefits, and slashing job-creating investments while boosting defense spending and giving tax breaks to the wealthy and to corporations.

E-Alert: ObamaCare at the Supreme Court

e-Alerts: 2012

Today, I had the distinct honor of sitting in on the Supreme Court oral arguments about the constitutionality of the new health reform law.

This morning the topic for the Court was the constitutionality of the individual responsibility component of the law. This provision requires people to choose between insuring themselves, or paying a penalty to help cover the cost of the health care they will inevitably need.

E-ALERT: Fighting for Lower Gas Prices, Clean Energy Future

e-Alerts: 2012

The spike in gas prices is hitting families hard. In our area, prices are well over $4. While some in Washington are using the increase in prices to attack the President, we need real solutions, not political slogans like “drill baby drill.”

E-ALERT: Voting to Protect the Sacramento Delta and the San Francisco Bay

e-Alerts: 2012

Today, the House voted on dangerous Republican legislation--the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Water Reliability Act--that puts the health of the Sacramento Delta, the San Francisco Bay and California wild salmon at risk, as well as the thousands of jobs that depend on them.

E-ALERT: My Vote in Support of the STOCK Act

e-Alerts: 2012

Today I voted in favor of the STOCK Act, which passed the House 417 - 2. It will strengthen current prohibitions on insider trading by lawmakers and staff and require public disclosure of stock and securities transactions within 45 days. This bill is an important step toward restoring public trust in Congress and ensuring that elected officials and senior government employees cannot use inside knowledge to enrich themselves.

E-ALERT: Closing a Tax Loophole to Protect Medicare, Taxpayers

e-Alerts: 2012

I introduced the Narrowing Exceptions for Withholding Taxes (NEWT) Act(H.R. 3840) yesterday, which would close a tax loophole that allows self-employed individuals -- typically lobbyists, lawyers and investment managers -- to avoid paying Medicare payroll taxes by routing earnings through an S corporation and classifying them as profits or dividends, instead of as wages.
