Pipeline Safety Legislation
The nation’s pipelines serve as the arteries of our energy infrastructure, enabling the safe, efficient and economical movement of extraordinary quantities of energy products to industry and consumers across the country.
Government and industry have taken steps over the years to improve pipeline safety, and in order to ensure that we continue this commitment to making this safe, efficient, and economical form of transportation even safer in the 112th Congress, Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) introduced the Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act of 2011 (H.R. 2845).
In December 2011, Republican and Democrat Transportation Committee leaders, working with House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders and Senate committee leaders, reached a bipartisan agreement to move this critical legislation, which the President signed into law on January 3rd, 2012.
This legislation strengthens safety programs for the nation's pipelines, fills gaps in existing law where necessary, and focuses on directly responding to recent pipeline incidents with balanced and reasonable policies.
The Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act also ensures the regulatory certainty in pipeline transportation necessary to allow businesses to make critical investments and create American jobs.
