Lummis Statement on Deficit Commission Recommendations

WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec 3, 2010 -  U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) released the following statement regarding the recommendations President Obama’s deficit commission put forth:

“I continue to prefer Paul Ryan’s plan to the deficit commission’s recommendations, in large part because the commission’s plan would leave the central components of the new health care law intact.

I believe that the enormous federal financial commitment to Medicare, Medicaid and now ObamaCare prevent us from addressing the long-term deficit. We have embedded deficits now.

I further believe, as do the administration’s own actuaries, that the new health care law bends the health care cost curve in the wrong direction.
Paul Ryan’s Roadmap provides a market-based health reform alternative – and that’s what our nation can afford.  And it relies on patient choice and responsibility, not more government.”

The deficit commission’s recommendations failed to earn the 14 votes needed to move the package to Congress.
