Women's Health

As a mother, a wife, and the only female physician Member of Congress, I appreciate the unique opportunity I have to protect and promote women’s health.  National Breast Cancer Awareness Month compels all of us to recognize the importance of regular screening and early detection of breast cancer.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer.  The National Cancer Institute estimates over 230,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.  And these are not “cases,” but women, with families and friends who share the burden of fighting a potentially deadly foe.

So, as Congress works to strengthen and reform our health care, we must continue to develop technology to mitigate and eliminate disease that disrupts lives and hurts our communities.  Early detection and timely treatment of breast cancer is crucial to effective therapy, and research is integral to achieving this goal.  With this in mind, I have supported continued funding for the National Institutes of Health, the nation’s preeminent medical research center, in the Fiscal Year 2012 budget, and I have supported various other legislative measures directed towards detection and treatment of breast cancer.  I am also a cosponsor of H.R. 466, legislation to extend for four years the authority of the United States Postal Service to issue a charity stamp to raise funds for breast cancer research.

As part of our team’s effort to promote and protect women’s health, we have been participating in breast cancer awareness events throughout the Nineteenth District of New York.  Please share your ideas about what we can be doing in Congress to protect women’s health here.  We hope you will join us!

Sincerely,

Nan Hayworth, M.D.
