Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9), a member of the House Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee, the House panel that appropriates funding for the World Bank, released the following statement:
President Obama made the right pick in nominating Dr. Jim Yong Kim as our nation’s nomination to be the next head of the World Bank. Dr. Kim has dedicated his life to working with the poor and impoverished around the world – the core mission of the World Bank. He has a remarkable record of accomplishment as the president of Dartmouth College, as a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship in 2003, as a doctor who earned a PhD and MD from Harvard University, and has been at the forefront in fighting tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Kim would be the first Asian-American and Korean-American to lead the World Bank, so President Obama’s pick is not only wise, it’s historic. The rise of great Korean-American leaders in my district, and throughout our nation, has made our great country even greater.
Dr. Kim as the head of the World Bank would be another step in the right direction.
