REP. STARK STATEMENT OPPOSING BAILOUT LEGISLATION

Today, the House of Representatives voted, 263-171, to concur with Senate amendments to H.R. 1424, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. Rep. Pete Stark (CA-13) opposed the bailout legislation today, as he did on Monday. Below is the text of Rep. Stark’s floor remarks in opposition to the bill.

Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008

The bill before us today is basically the same three-page Wall Street give away first put forth by President Bush. The fig leaf adjustments are not enough to outweigh the fact that no one knows if this bill is what’s needed. I’m not willing to make a $700 billion gamble that President Bush is right after 8 years of seeing all that he’s done wrong.

Nursing Home Transparency and Quality of Care Improvement Act of 2008

This legislation is a companion bill to one introduced by my Senate colleagues, Senators Grassley and Kohl. I thank them for their leadership and look forward to working with them on this issue in the next Congress.

Statement of Congressman Pete Stark Supporting Comprehensive Energy Legislation

Rather than putting forth real solutions, the President and his Congressional Republican enablers have offered a regressive plan and a slick political slogan that amounts to more giveaways to oil companies with nothing that will lower prices in the short-term or move our nation away from fossil fuel dependence in the long-term.

Statement of Representative Pete Stark In Opposition to Increased Gun Violence in DC

I don’t agree with the Supreme Court’s decision. Regardless, I do believe that the D.C. City Council is in the best position to decide what regulations are appropriate for their community. Congress has trampled on the District’s autonomy for long enough.

Michelle’s Law provides needed protections and will help students who are enrolled in college and who only qualify as dependents under their parents’ health insurance plans because of their student status.

Statement of Congressman Pete Stark regarding the Tobacco Control Act

Tobacco does not just affect individuals who smoke; it affects our children’s’ futures and the economic prospects of our nation. Each year because of tobacco use we lose more than $96 billion in medical costs and $97 billion as a consequence of lost productivity.

Statement of Congressman Pete Stark Introducing the Foster Children Opportunity Act

Members on all sides of the immigration debate should put down our differences when it comes to protecting abused and neglected children. We should not let the poisonous politics of immigration interfere with helping foster children become successful adults.

Statement of Representative Pete Stark In Support of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge

This bill would unite the Bay Area’s seven separate national wildlife refuges into a single wildlife complex in order to leverage greater federal funding for these unique habitats.

Stark Opposes Lack of Reform in Farm Bill Conference Report

Madam Speaker, I rise today in opposition to a Farm Bill Conference Report (H.R. 2419) that will continue our wasteful agricultural policy for another five years. It is a rare day indeed that I agree with President Bush, but he is absolutely right to have issued a veto threat of this bill.

Statement of Congressmen Pete Stark Introducing the "Family Leave Insurance Act of 2008"

The U.S. is part of an illustrious four-member club of nations--including Liberia, Papua New Guinea, and Swaziland--that fail to provide security for new parents or those caring for a loved one. The "Family Leave Insurance Act" will guarantee that workers will no longer have to choose between their jobs and their families.

Statement of Congressman Pete Stark Supporting Debt Cancellation for Impoverished Nations

Madam Speaker, I rise today in strong support of legislation that will save thousands of lives around the world. By allowing poor countries to use scarce resources to provide for the health and well being of their citizens rather than to repay debt to wealthy nations, we are doing what is humane, right, and just.

Statement of Representative Pete Stark In Support of Preserving Civil Liberties

Our government was designed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. But under President Bush, it has been a government of the executive branch, by the executive branch, and for the executive branch.

Stark urges Congress to act to slash poverty rate in half

"Madam Speaker, I rise today in strong support of resolving to cut poverty in half over the next ten years.  America is the richest country in the history of the world, yet 37 million Americans languish in poverty.  The poverty rate is an inexcusable 17% for all children and 33% for black children.  As a body, Congress has a moral obligation to alleviate poverty and provide all people with opportunities to lead healthy and independent lives."
