WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Illinois Department of Transportation has received a $300,000 Transportation, Community, and System Preservation grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for Columbia. The funding will be used to reconstruct and widen sidewalks along South Main Street from Oak Street to Cherry Street in downtown Columbia.
“This grant will improve pedestrian access and safety downtown,” said Costello, a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. “Maintaining our transportation infrastructure is also critical for economic development. With this in mind, Congress recently passed a new highway bill to ensure that this type of funding is available for the next several years.”
