Weekly Address Highlights: Rep. Nan Hayworth on GOP Jobs Bills & Full-Year Payroll Tax Relief Extension

Posted by Michael Ricci on Speak.gov/Blog

In the Weekly Republican Address, Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-NY) highlights Republicans’ Plan for America’s Job Creators and House-passed jobs bills awaiting action in the Democratic-controlled Senate.  Among those bills is legislation that incorporates key elements of the president’s jobs plan, including tax incentives for business expensing, a full-year extension of payroll tax relief, and a full-year extension of unemployment insurance; Rep. Hayworth is one of the House GOP negotiators charged with completing this jobs bill.  In the address, Rep. Hayworth also marks the one-year anniversary of the Tucson, AZ shooting that took six lives.  You can now watchthe Weekly Republican Address, and read the transcript.

“DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE NEED TO ACT”
To get the economy moving again Democrats in the Senate need to act on House-passed jobs bills, Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-N.Y.) said in her party's weekly address. ‘Right now, there are nearly 30 jobs bills passed by the House with support from both Republicans and Democrats that are awaiting action in the Democratic-run Senate,’ she said. ‘One vote is all each of these jobs bills needs to get to the president’s desk, and it’s disappointing the Senate hasn’t acted.’” (“Rep. Hayworth: Senate needs to act on House-passed jobs bills,” The Hill, 1/7/12)

“CALLED ON THE PRESIDENT TO USE HIS STATE OF THE UNION” TO SHOW WILLINGNESS TO WORK WITH GOP
“In the Republican radio Address, Representative Nan Hayworth of New York called on the president to use his State of the Union address later this month to show a ‘willingness to work with Republicans’ to enact the 30 jobs bills already passed in the Republican-led House.  She said the [nearly] 30 bills that haven’t been taken up by the Democratic-led Senate include one that would extend the payroll tax cut for a full year and extend unemployment insurance.” (Bloomberg, 1/7/12)

MORE GOP JOBS BILLS IN THE COMING WEEKS
“In their address, Republicans said Senate Democrats were holding up jobs progress. … ‘In the coming weeks, the House will consider job-creating proposals to reduce unnecessary and burdensome regulations, and repair and improve America's roads and bridges,’ she said. ‘Instead of just spending more on short-term fixes, we'd be permanently removing government barriers to job creation.’” (“In weekly addresses, Obama and GOP speak to job creation,” CNN, 1/7/12)

PAYROLL TAX RELIEF: GOP-LED HOUSE HAS ACTED, DEM SENATE HAS NOT
“Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (R-NY19) delivered the Weekly Republican Address to the nation on Saturday calling on the Democrat-controlled Senate to take action on jobs bills already approved in the Republican House of Representatives. … Hayworth said that while the House has passed a full year extension of the payroll tax holiday, the Senate, ‘controlled by the president’s own party, has not.’” (“GOP Address: Rep. Hayworth Says 'No Higher Priority' than Jobs,” ABC News Radio, 1/7/12)

“‘NO HIGHER PRIORITY’ THAN JOBS”
Republicans, Hayworth said, are ‘hopeful’ that in his State of the Union address, President Obama ‘will express a willingness to work with Republicans to enact all of these jobs bills.’ … She said House-passed jobs legislation would address ‘excessive regulation,’ encourage entrepreneurship and force the federal government to spend within its means.”  (“Hayworth: 'No higher priority' than jobs,” UPI, 1/7/12)

UNEMPLOYMENT ABOVE EIGHT PERCENT FOR LONGEST STRETCH SINCE GREAT DEPRESSION
“Rep. Nan Hayworth, R-N.Y., delivering the GOP address, said the jobs report showed the difficulty that many Americans face in finding work.  Hayworth said the unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent for 35 straight months, ‘the longest such stretch since the Great Depression.’” (Associated Press, 1/7/12)

NOTING THE ANNIVERSARY OF TUCSON SHOOTING
“Hayworth concluded by noting the anniversary of the shooting a year ago tomorrow of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, and several of her constituents in a Tucson parking lot.  ‘In those difficult hours, Americans reminded the world that no act of violence would silence the dialogue of democracy,’ Hayworth said. ‘All of us who have the privilege to serve with Gabby continue to pray for her recovery.’” (Bloomberg, 1/7/12)
