Mid-Hudson News: Federal lawmakers praise Postal Service's decision to hold off on closing Stewart mail center

WASHINGTON – House Members Maurice Hinchey (D-22) and Nan Hayworth (R-19) hailed the US Postal Service’s decision not to close the Mid-Hudson mail processing and distribution center at Stewart Airport in the Town of Newburgh in 2013.

Both lawmakers had opposed the closure and conveyed their feelings to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

“Not only does keeping this facility open continue to provide good-paying jobs that will help the area’s economy, it also ensures that the Hudson Valley has an effective mail delivery system, which is critical to our region’s businesses,” Hinchey said on Thursday.

Hayworth asked Donahoe to review the current plan for reorganization and consolidation of mail processing centers “to determine if an alternative course will generate the necessary savings, rather than complete closures of these facilities.”
