Chairman King Statement on 11th Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks of 9/11

We collectively pause this week to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans killed by al-Qaeda terrorists 11 years ago
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement on the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11:
“We collectively pause this week to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans killed by al-Qaeda terrorists 11 years ago in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As I have on each September 11 since 2001, I will honor their memories alongside a number of their families in New York and on Long Island, by visiting Ground Zero, meeting with firefighters and police officers, and taking part in 9/11 memorial commemorations.
“As we remember those who perished on that morning, we also recognize and honor the service of the countless military, intelligence, DHS and law enforcement personnel, as well as other first responders, who work tirelessly 24 hours a day around the world to secure our Homeland and protect the lives of Americans here and abroad.
“While our Homeland is more secure today than it was 11 years ago, the terror threat remains – even with the elimination of terrorists such as Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. Eleven years ago, we faced in al-Qaeda a cohesive organization based in Afghanistan. Today, through its affiliates, al-Qaeda is an evolving, geographically dispersed network spread throughout a number of countries working to recruit and radicalize individuals within the United States. In the face of this continuing threat, continued vigilance by all of us is as important as ever.”
