    Montgomery County has taken another significant step forward in its open government efforts, launching a new openMontgomery website that will significantly improve government transparency, accessibility and efficiency (Press Release). The site includes four distinct portals:

    NEW COUNTY COUNCIL OFFICERS … Nancy Navarro was unanimously selected as the new president of the Montgomery County Council on Dec. 4. She became the first Latina president of the Council. Craig Rice was unanimously selected as vice president. They will serve one-year terms.

    SENATOR CARDIN VISITS... U.S. Senator Ben Cardin met informally with the members of the Montgomery County Council on Dec. 10, talking about serious issues such as transportation, the status of relocating federal facilities to the County, immigration and education funding. However, there was still time for a few lighter moments, as shared here, left to right, by Council Vice President Craig Rice, Councilmember Phil Andrews, Senator Cardin and Council President Nancy Navarro.

    AN UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR II . . . The Montgomery County Council on Nov. 27 honored Japanese-American veterans of World War II, many of whom chose to live in the County over the past seven decades. Many of the soldiers volunteered for military service after being among the 117,000 Japanese-Americans placed in internment camps after the war started. The segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team fought fiercely, such that 93 percent of its members were either wounded or killed in action. The 442nd holds the distinguished honor of being the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. Terry Shima (speaking) of Gaithersburg was a member of the 442nd.

  • Literary Art Contest for MLK 2012

    The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee is seeking entries for its literary arts contest in observance of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The writing contest is open to all elementary, middle and high schools students in Montgomery County. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, December 14. For more information about the contest, see press release.
