New York City's ring of radiation detection will get $18 million in federal funding for the next fiscal year, a federal source said Friday.

The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will grant nearly half of the $37 million it is devoting to the Securing the Cities Initiative to New York.

Since 2007, the New York Police Department will have gotten $103.75 million in federal funding, the source said.

"The Securing the Cities Program is absolutely essential to New York City," said Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "The main concern we have is a dirty bomb attack from the suburbs."
