This past Thursday morning, veterans gathered at the Wantagh American Legion Post No. 1273 Hall with their family and friends to honor those who have fought for their country.

The Veterans Day ceremony was hosted by Wantagh American Legion Commander Jack Bergerson,  who led the hundreds in attendance through a heartfelt ceremony.  One of the speakers was Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford.  "While we are busy with our lives, going to work, taking care of our family and friends, let's never forget those who are fighting for us overseas," said King. "We need to stand with them."

Wreaths were presented by organizations such as the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce, the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence, Knights of Columbus 6526, the Kiwanis Club of Wantagh and the Wantagh School District. Boy Scout troops 656 and 98 as well as Cub Scout troop 191 also attended the ceremony and presented wreaths.

Commander Bergerson rang a bell 11 times, which symbolized the 11th hour, the 11th day and the 11th month, which is in honor of the moment that the Armistice was signed to end World War I.  A firing squad stepped outside the building to fire two shots in the air, and "America the Beautiful," was played on the bagpipes.
