Washington, Aug 6, 2007 - Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono is currently hosting a group of six legislators from Mongolia who are visiting Hawai‘i as part of an exchange program organized by the House Democracy Assistance Commission (HDAC).

Congresswoman Hirono was appointed by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to the serve on the Commission, which was created to help emerging democracies throughout the world. HDAC members work with legislators and government officials from other countries, sharing ideas about American institutions and practices that can serve as a model for nations seeking to implement democratic reforms.

“I welcome our distinguished visitors from the Mongolian legislature who are here to observe the work that I do for the people of the 2nd Congressional District. While they are here they are learning about our great American democracy as well as experiencing the aloha spirit for which we are famous all the way around the world,”
Congresswoman Hirono said.

Mongolia is a vast country located between Russia and China. Democracy was established in Mongolia in 1990, after years of demonstrations by the people though without force or violence.

The six legislators are members of the State Grand Hural, the legislative body of Mongolia, and they are affiliated with several different parties.

As part of the HDAC exchange program Congresswoman Hirono traveled to Mongolia with a Congressional delegation last month, meeting with legislative counterparts and beginning to build relationships. “We talked about ways to develop and enforce a code of ethics, strengthening legislative committees and establishing constituent services. I was impressed by the commitment of the Mongolian officials and people I met to democratic reform,” Congresswoman Hirono said.

The Mongolian delegation was in Washington DC this month for briefing and meetings before arriving in Hawai‘i, where they have attended seminars at the East-West Center as well as learning about Hawaiian culture and history. On Tuesday Congresswoman Hirono and the group will visit Nalo Farms and an early childhood education school in Waimanalo that is part of the Pre-Plus Program Congresswoman helped create as Lieutenant Governor. She will host a farewell dinner for the delegation Tuesday night.
