Lakewood, CO – Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter released the following statement in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday to be observed on Monday, January 17, 2011.
“Monday is a time to remember and honor the civil rights legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the designation of that day as a national day of volunteerism. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act which designates Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national day of volunteer service. I encourage everyone who is able to find a local community project and volunteer their time and talents. Dr. King led by example to make America a more inclusive and tolerant nation. By volunteering our time and energy in our neighborhoods, we too can lead by example to strengthen our communities and make America a better place for our children.”
