Rep. Perlmutter Commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month

September 16, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Rep. Perlmutter issued the following statement in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15 every year:

“During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the Hispanic community and pay tribute to the contributions they have made to our nation, and continue to make every day. The 47.5 million-strong Hispanic community makes America a better and stronger nation. Here in Colorado and the 7th Congressional District, we have a vibrant Hispanic community that contributes to the diversity which makes America great.

“The 111th Congress is taking steps to help hard working Americans during the economic downturn. Earlier this year, we extended affordable health care coverage to 4 million more children whose parents can’t afford their own health insurance but earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. Additionally, we preserved coverage for 7 million children already enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). With 20 percent of Hispanic children uninsured, this legislation is vital for this important community.

“Furthermore, we passed major legislation to improve the lives of America’s veterans – including 1.1 million Hispanic veterans. The 21st Century GI Bill provides a free four-year college education to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. This program is similar to the educational benefits provided to World War II veterans which helped build our middle-class. Congress also provided the largest increase in funding for veterans’ health care in the 77-year history of the Veterans’ Administration.

“I am proud to celebrate the contributions and heritage of our country’s Hispanic community.”
