Rep. Perlmutter Supports Interstate Portability Provision in Healthcare Bill

October 29, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) announced his support for a provision allowing for interstate portability of healthcare included within H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act.

Yesterday, Rep. Perlmutter, along with 19 other Representatives successfully influenced House Leadership to include the ability for states to create regional healthcare choice compacts to help individuals purchase insurance across state lines. Additionally, the group successfully included a provision to allow private insurance companies to offer new products with uniform benefits and prices to consumers in multiple states, which serves to enhance competition of the private insurance market.

Perlmutter stated, “There has to be real change to the way the system operates – for those with preexisting conditions, for our seniors, for small businesses, and to the nation as a whole as we continue to see costs go through the roof. We can’t allow failure to reign. We must act.

“These provisions will increase the number of people with healthcare coverage at a lower price. The increased competition will allow insurance companies to offer new products with uniform benefits in multiple states.

“Additionally, this bill provides security for our seniors and meets the cost guidelines set forth by the President without expanding the deficit”
