A crowdsourcing effort started at the UW in 2008 lets members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community build their own guide to the evolving lexicon of science.

“It’s not a dictionary,” explained Richard Ladner, a UW professor of computer science and engineering. “The goal of the forum is to be constantly changing, a reflection of the current use.”

A decade ago, a British philosopher put forth the notion that the universe we live in might in fact be a computer simulation run by our descendants.

While that seems far-fetched, perhaps even incomprehensible, a team of physicists at the University of Washington has come up with a potential test to see if the idea holds water.

Excessive debate and/or ambiguity on national tax, spending, regulation and debt decisions creates an environment of uncertainty that has an ill effect on financial markets. And this malaise can outlast the uncertainty itself.

The research study was conducted by Jonathan Brogaard, an assistant professor of finance, and Andrew Detzel, a doctoral student at Foster. “We’re finding,” says Brogaard, “that the lack of a decision can be just as bad as a bad decision.”

The fossilized bones were discovered back in the 1930s, in Tanzania, in a major find that included a vast collection of specimens. They were gathering dust at the Natural History Museum, London, until the scientist who had custody passed away.

“They were essentially under study for 50 years, and the study was never finished,” says Sterling Nesbitt, a dinosaur expert at the Burke Museum of the University of Washington.
