Hill Dems Prefer 'Broke Down' Over 'Super Broke Down' Message

Jul 10, 2012

Following the President’s demand for massive tax hikes yesterday, Hill Dems are dusting off the cobwebs on some old bills in hopes of making it through July. The point: Congressional Democrats are not on board with the White House message of defending ObamaCare and raising taxes on families and small businesses – they prefer the ‘broke down’ message over the ‘super broke down’ message.

March 26, 2012: Senate Dems Unveil Tax Plan. “Senate Democrats Monday unveiled a $26 billion temporary tax cut for businesses to boost their payrolls and encourage investment in new equipment. The legislation would award businesses a tax credit of 10 percent on the salaries of new hires or for pay raises given to existing workers.” (Andy Taylor, “Senate Democrats Unveil Business Tax Breaks,” The Associated Press, 3/26/12)

July 10, 2012: Democrats Re-Unveil Tax Plan. “Democrats want to push tax cuts through the Senate for companies that hire new workers, give raises or buy major new equipment this year. With neither party eager to let the other claim campaign-season victories, the ultimate fate of the roughly $29 billion legislation seems dubious.” (Alan Fram, “Senate Democrats Pushing Tax Cuts For Business,” The Associated Press, 7/10/12)

July 9, 2012: Whip Hoyer Unveils “Make It In America.” “House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer is planning to unveil new jobs legislation today in a noon speech at the Center for American Progress. The legislation, which has little chance of passing the GOP-controlled House, is an effort by Democrats to focus on jobs while Republicans are voting on repealing the health care law.” (Chris Frates, “Hoyer to Unveil Jobs Legislation Today,” National Journal’s “Influence Alley”, July 10, 2012)

May 4, 2011: Whip Hoyer Unveils “Make It In America.” “House Democratic leaders unveiled Wednesday the latest version of their ‘Make It In America’ agenda, aimed at creating manufacturing jobs and boosting the economy. At a Capitol news conference, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the program’s architect, joined with more than a dozen members of the House Democratic caucus to announce the agenda, which includes more than 30 pieces of legislation or legislative agenda items. (Felicia Sonmez, “House Democrats Re-Launch ‘Make It In America’ Manufacturing Jobs Agenda,” The Washington Post’s “2 Chambers” Blog, 5/4/11)

October 6, 2010: Whip Hoyer Op-Ed Announcing “Make It In America.” “…That's why Democrats are pursuing the Make It In America agenda, a plan to create middle-class jobs by rebuilding our manufacturing sector.” (Rep. Steny Hoyer Op-Ed, “Democrats' Make It In America Agenda,” The Huffington Post, 10/6/10)
