Carney is Mistaken

Dec 6, 2012

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today that Senate Democrats support the principles in the President’s cliff proposal that includes a $1.6 Trillion tax hike:

White House Is “Very Confident” Democrats Support Priniciples Outlined In Obama’s (‘Geithner Plan’) “…the White House was “very confident” that Democrats support the principles outlined in Obama’s plan, which has met with derision among Republicans.” (Jim O’Sullivan, “White House Swats Away McConnell's Suggestion,” National Journal, 12/6/12)

Uh…. Jay, they actually don’t:

Dem Senators Alarmed By Size Of President’s $1.6 Trillion Tax Hike & New Stimulus Spending. “Lost amid last week’s hubbub over the GOP’s quick and public rejection of the White House’s latest plan to solve the fiscal cliff was the quiet alarm some in-cycle Senate Democrats felt at the prospect of voting to raise $1.6 trillion in revenue, provide more government stimulus and permanently minimize Congress’ role in approving debt limit hikes.” (Meredith Shiner, “Administration's Cliff Offer Presents a Challenge for Centrist Democrats,” Roll Call, 12/2/12)

Begich Is “Uneasy” About Ceding All Authority Over Debt Limit To Executive: “…said he’s uneasy about ceding all power to the executive. ‘If it’s just, ‘Get rid of it,’ without any future oversight, I get a little nervous about that…’” (Meredith Shiner, “Administration's Cliff Offer Presents a Challenge for Centrist Democrats,” Roll Call, 12/2/12)

Begich & Landrieu Oppose President’s Proposed Gas Tax – The Call It “Completely Unserious.” “Mary Landrieu — the Democrat from Louisiana — is not going to support the gas tax, neither is Mark Begich of Alaska. It’s completely unserious.” (Meredith Shiner, “Administration's Cliff Offer Presents a Challenge for Centrist Democrats,” Roll Call, 12/2/12)

Dems Are Divided On President’s Proposal To Extend Payroll Tax. “…Democrats appear divided over whether to extend the president’s signature payroll tax cut as part of any fiscal cliff deal.” (Humberto Sanchez, “Democrats Divided Over Payroll Tax Cut Extension,” Roll Call, 12/5/12)

Dems Are Divided On President’s Call To Increase Death Tax. “The proposal is sure to encounter criticism from at least some Democrats. One provision would return the estate tax to its 2009 levels, when a 45 percent rate was imposed on inheritances worth more than $3.5 million.” (Steven Sloan & Joseph J. Schatz, “Geithner’s Fiscal Cliff Offer: Obama Wish List,” Politico, 11/29/12)

Roll Call: “Chairman Max Baucus Is Certainly Not Going To Support Estate Tax Proposal.” “Max Baucus, the chairman of the Finance Committee, is certainly not going to support the estate tax proposal” (Humberto Sanchez, “Democrats Divided Over Payroll Tax Cut Extension,” Roll Call, 12/5/12)

Senate Dems Not Allowing Vote On President’s Proposal Is To Protect Vulnerable Members. “Top Democratic aides acknowledge that accommodating members key to maintaining their majority is part of their overall responsibility as talks continue.” (Humberto Sanchez, “Democrats Divided Over Payroll Tax Cut Extension,” Roll Call, 12/5/12)
