Congressman Akin is pleased to disclose the projects that he has requested the Appropriations Committee to consider for funding. Each of these projects, along with their intended recipient, their purpose, and the amount of funding requested is listed here by Fiscal Year.

Guide to the Appropriations Process

Perhaps when you think about an “earmark,” the $320 million “bridge to nowhere” comes to mind. Too often, the federal appropriations process seems like just another broken federal government system.

But just how should projects be funded anyway? Should elected Members of Congress have a direct role in determining which earmarks are funded? Should a government bureaucrat in Washington, D.C. make that decision? What is an earmark? Are all earmarks “pork” – waste that should be eliminated?  Can transparency help eliminate waste?

The fact is that without the appropriations process, distant bureaucrats would be deciding whether local projects are worth funding. The Constitution explicitly grants the “power of the purse” to Congress so that elected representatives are accountable to the people for their spending decisions.

Throughout his time in Congress, Congressman Akin has used the appropriations process carefully, submitting only a limited number of requests. Whether it is protecting a community from flooding by rebuilding a levee, keeping traffic moving on the Page Avenue Extension or continuing the production line of F-18s, each of Congressman Akin’s requests are for projects that are important to the 2nd District of Missouri and have been vetted with local leaders in the community.

While many earmarks are inappropriate and wasteful, Congressman Akin is committed to transparency and accountability in the federal appropriations process. Citizens should have the opportunity to evaluate earmarks and know how your tax dollars are being spent.

Please review more Earmark FAQs and take time to send Todd an email with your thoughts.

(Notes on the State of Virginia: Query XVIII, 1781) --- Thomas Jefferson co-wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. He was the third President of the United States.
