November is American Diabetes Month

Today marks the beginning of American Diabetes Month. The CDC reports that 9.8% of Georgians have been diagnosed, that’s 1.5% above the national average. With 26 million people living with it and another 76 million at risk, diabetes is a rapidly growing disease we can’t ignore.

Diabetes is group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action or both. Treatment includes changing eating habits, medication, or insulin injections or pumps. Self-management and education is a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

As the holiday season begins, I encourage everyone in the third district to educate themselves on prevention and healthy eating habits. Each week in November I will discuss different types of diabetes, as well as prevention and awareness. I hope everyone takes time to reflect on how diabetes affects themselves and their loved ones. What does A Day in the Life of Diabetes mean to you?
