Washington, Nov 13, 2008 - A U.S. District Court Judge this week left unchanged the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, the two ex-border patrol agents convicted of illegally shooting a fleeing drug dealer on the Texas-Mexico border.

And Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is not happy about Judge Kathleen Cardon’s decision. Here is what he said in a statement today:

“This case is an ongoing travesty of justice that needs to be set right and I call on President Bush to do the right thing and commute their sentences,” said Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach. He and a group of House members have been crusading to get the two freed.

“Many patriotic Americans are dismayed by the continued persecution and legal torture of former Border Patrol officers Ramos and Compean,” Rohrabacher said. “The legal establishment has obviously taken its directives from senior levels of the Bush administration.”

Cardon had to re-sentence the two former officers because the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans had thrown out part of the 2006 convictions and ordered new sentences. But Compean’s original 12-year sentence will stand as will Ramos’ 11-year term.
