Official photo of Congressman Jason Altmire. Congressman Jason Altmire is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represents all or parts of six counties in western Pennsylvania.

In all, Jason has authored 48 different legislative initiatives that have passed the House, 28 of which have been signed into law. Nine of those laws are related to veterans, including his bill allowing military families to qualify for the Family and Medical Leave Act, which was the first expansion of FMLA since its inception in 1993. He also led the effort to guarantee bonuses for all combat wounded veterans.

As a subcommittee chairman on the Small Business Committee from 2007-2010, Jason twice passed through House legislation that expanded access to capital for small businesses. A leading fiscal conservative Democrat, Jason runs his office so efficiently that he has already returned more than $650,000 to the federal Treasury during his time in office.

A nationally recognized leader on health care policy, Jason was a key participant in the health care reform debate and remains one of the most requested speakers on the topic for national association meetings and on media outlets across the country.  Jason authored the legislation that ended the late enrollment penalty for low-income seniors participating in the Medicare Part D program, and he played a decisive role in preventing a proposed 2007 Medicare budget cut for hospitals. In 2008, he successfully led the effort the delay the Medicare competitive bidding program, and in 2009, he introduced the legislation that became the template for the hospital value-based purchasing demonstration project included as part the Affordable Care Act.

After Haiti’s devastating earthquake in January 2010, Jason helped lead the high-profile mission to rescue two constituents trapped in Haiti along with the 54 orphans under their care, safely bringing the entire group to the United States.

Jason is a frequent guest on a number of national television news programs and has been profiled in a variety of national media outlets.

Voting Record: Jason is consistently recognized as one of the most independent members of Congress. A recent non-partisan study of congressional votes identified him as having a reliably centrist voting record. He has cast more than 5,000 votes since being sworn-in to the House in 2007.

Background: Jason grew up in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania and attended Burrell High School, where he was a record-breaking two-sport athlete. He received his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, where he was a member of the school's first Sugar Bowl championship football team. He later earned a Master's Degree in Health Administration from George Washington University.

Prior to his election to Congress in 2006, Jason spent 15 years in health care policy, working as a congressional staffer, a hospital association executive and for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Jason currently lives in the North Hills of Allegheny County with his wife, Kelly, and their two daughters.
