The House Passes S. 3789, Social Security Number Protection Act of 2010

Monday, December 20, 2010

I am glad the government has taken more steps to help protect individuals' Social Security numbers.  Identity theft is one of the fastest growing types of fraud in the U.S.; in 2009 about 11.1 million Americans were reportedly victims of identity theft, an increase of about 12% from the number of cases in 2008.  As a former Member of the House Financial Services Committee, I have worked closely with victims of this crime to beef up protections, including authoring legislation that resulted in allowing individuals free access to one credit report each year.
