Social Security Announces 12 New Compassionate Allowances

The Social Security Administration recently announced 12 new Compassionate Allowances that make it possible for Social Security to provide benefits quickly to applicants whose medical conditions are so serious that their conditions obviously meet disability standards.

With the addition of the new allowances, there are now 100 allowances in the expedited disability process, including ones that cover many cancers, early-onset Alzheimer's disease and rare disorders that affect children.  The 12 new Compassionate Allowances include several heart or cardiac issues, including the heart transplant waiting list.   Last year Social Security approved more than 100,000 disability cases with the fast-track Compassionate Allowance program, usually in less than two weeks. This year, the agency expects to fast-track nearly 150,000 cases.
