Tuesday, March 15, 2011
It will soon cost almost $63 million per NASA astronaut to hitch
a ride to the International Space Station on a Russian Soyuz
rocket. The last contract to transport astronauts on the
Russian spacecraft was just under $56 million per ride.
NASA says the new contract extension with the Russian Space
Agency totals $753 million, and will covers seats for a dozen
astronauts from 2014 to 2016. Under terms of the
contract, an astronaut with a seat on the Soyuz can
take 110 pounds of cargo to the International Space
Station and return to earth with 37 pounds of cargo and
66 pounds of trash.
