Local Fire Grant Awards
Wednesday, January 12, 2011
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Township) today
announced that three local fire departments will get federal grants
for equipment.
The grants are through the popular Assistance to Firefighters
Grant (AFG) program that helps departments obtain needed equipment
and training.
LaTourette said Northfield Village FD will receive a $61,095
grant to purchase 23 sets of turnout gear, and a washer and dryer
to clean the gear. The same department last year got a
$261,250 grant for a new fire pumper.
The Mantua-Shalersville FD will receive $43,905 in federal funds
to replace fire hose and place mobile data terminals in fire
vehicles. In addition, the Mecca Township Volunteer Fire
Department in Trumbull County will receive a $55,897 grant to
purchase 11 new breathing devices.
"I'm so pleased these departments will receive funding through
this very popular and competitive grant program," LaTourette
said.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered
through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It assists rural,
urban and suburban fire departments across the country.
Volunteer, paid and combination departments can seek funding.
There is generally a local match for each grant, and that can
depend on the size of the department and the community's
population.
There were more than 16,000 requests for funding, and $390
million in grants will be awarded this year with Fiscal Year 2010
funding.
