LaTourette announces grant
for Geneva wetlands
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Township) today
announced that the Cleveland Museum of Natural History has been
awarded a grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect
wetlands in Geneva.
The grant is part of $930,000 awarded to protect, restore or
enhance 791 acres of wetlands and wildlife habitat in Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York under the Great Lakes
Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
The natural history museum was awarded $61,250 for the Geneva
Swamp Protection Project, which will protect 50 acres of
high-quality wetlands about three miles south of Geneva State Park
Lodge. The wetlands in that area total about 400 acres, and
are home to rare and endangered plants and animals. It also
supports an exceptional diversity of breeding and migratory
birds.
"I want to congratulate the Cleveland Museum of Natural History
for receiving this grant, and I'm very pleased it will benefit
their wetland preservation efforts in Geneva," LaTourette said.
Federal officials say this parcel will contribute to a larger
complex of recently protected areas, and will enable project
partners to better protect and restore the unique natural
communities and priority breeding birds present in the project
area.
