Lake County Sheriff's Department will get 250K COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant to hire two deputies with military service
Wednesday, September 26, 2012
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (OH-14) today announced
that the Lake County Sheriff's Department has been selected to
receive additional funding beyond the $111 million provided to law
enforcement agencies nationwide. Only about a dozen
departments across the country were selected for the additional
funding, he said
"This is great news for Sheriff Dunlap and his department,"
LaTourette said, adding that "helping our veterans is an extra
bonus."
The $250,000 CHP grant headed to the sheriff's department will
provide 75 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and
benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer
positions (including filling existing unfunded vacancies) or for
rehired officers who have been laid off, or are scheduled to be
laid off on a future date, as a result of local budget cuts.
Any additional costs above the approved entry-level salaries and
fringe benefits, up to $125,000, are the responsibility of the
grant recipient.
LaTourette said the 2012 CHP grants come with a twist: All new
officers hired under the 2012 grant program must be military
veterans that have served at least 180 days of active military
service, any part of which occurred on or after September 11,
2001. Departments are encouraged to work with veterans'
groups to fill positions.
