Federal Funds for Local Fire Departments

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Township) today announced that four fire departments in his district will receive federal grants.

The grants are through the popular Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program that helps departments obtain needed equipment and training.   There were more than 16,000 requests for funding, and $390 million in grants will be awarded this year with Fiscal Year 2010 funding.

The following departments will receive grants:

  • $108,768 for Mentor Fire Department to purchase 40 portable radios;
  • $122,072 for Concord Fire Department to implement a township-wide, traffic pre-emption system to help reduce response time for emergency vehicles;
  • $41,192 for Thompson Township Fire Department; and
  • $56,240 for Johnston Fire Department in Farmdale.

"This is a popular, competitive program and I know the federal grants will be very helpful to the local fire departments," LaTourette said.

For additional information, please contact the departments.
