Ashtabula Sheriff gets
$419,740 federal grant to hire officers for three
years
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-Bainbridge Township) today
announced that the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department will
receive $419,740 through the Fiscal Year 2011 COPS Hiring
Program.
A total of $243.4 million for the COPS hiring program will
create or preserve 1,021 sworn law enforcement positions for three
years across the country. The grants cover the full salary
and benefits packages for three years and the department will be
obligated to keep the officers or deputies on payroll with full
salary and benefits for one full year after the three-year grant
ends.
LaTourette said the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department can
use the funding to hire or rehire two officers.
"The fiscal year ends on Friday so the Sheriff's Department is
getting a grant just before the funding has to be spent. If
you have to wait until the last minute for a grant, it's worth the
wait for good news like this," LaTourette said. "This COPS
Hiring program makes it possible to bring back laid off officers or
hire new ones with no local match for three years. I'm sure
this is welcome news for Sheriff Johnson."
The COPS hiring program also announced more than $16 million in
hiring grants for 67 officer positions in Ohio, including 25
officers each in Cleveland and Cincinnati. East Cleveland,
Lorain and Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police also
received grants for officers.
The grant to the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department was the
only one awarded in the 14th Congressional District; the only one
awarded to a Sheriff's Department in Ohio; and one of just eight
COPS Hiring grants awarded in the entire state of Ohio, LaTourette
said.
