FDA warns against needle-free flu vaccine

By:  Mitsi Crane, Columbus Dispatch

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned against giving flu shots with needle-free injectors.

Several retailers who have been administering vaccines with the devices have stopped.

The FDA has approved the use of jet injectors only for the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella and has no data to support its use for other vaccines, the agency said.

It was unclear as of this morning whether those people who've already been vaccinated with an injector should be re-vaccinated.

"We're still looking into the issue and unfortunately at this very moment, we can't answer that question, but we hope to be able to very, very soon," said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
