ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - Congress passed a bill Wednesday introduced by Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) that will cut funding for the General Services Administration to buy vehicles for the federal government fleet by 20 percent. The government fleet currently has more than 700,000 vehicles, and this bill will substantially reduce that number.
"This bipartisan bill will cut the wasteful spending that folks are tired of in Washington," Barrow says. "Spending hard-earned taxpayer money on more vehicles the federal government could do without is irresponsible. We have to find places to cut spending, and this is a step in the right direction."
The cost to operate those vehicles is nearly $4 billion every year, with the cost increasing by 5.4 percent in just the last six years. The bill will hopefully save the government $500 million that can be used for deficit reduction.
