Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education

Innovation has always been our economy’s greatest source of strength, and it will be key to our economic recovery. The U.S. must continue to expand and improve STEM education, to ensure that American students are well prepared for the high-tech workforce that awaits them. Investing in STEM education means investing in the future of our economy.

The U.S. is home to the world’s best universities, where today’s students train for tomorrow’s workforce, and creative thinkers conduct research and develop new technologies. But we cannot assume that today’s competitiveness ensures tomorrow’s success. By increasing access to and constantly improving the quality of higher education in this country, we will not only prepare the next generation of innovators, we will continue to be a magnet for the world’s best and brightest students.

It is also critical to ensure that not only are college graduates prepared for the high-tech workforce, but that high school graduates are prepared for college courses in high-tech fields. Congressman Dreier has been a consistent supporter of efforts to enhance the quality of and participation in elementary and high school math and science programs. Leaders in the academic and high-tech communities of Southern California have frequently said that the time to build a foundation in math and science comes long before the college years. Without a solid background at an early age, students simply do not possess the educational skills – or the interest – in high-tech fields. Improving higher education requires improving elementary and secondary education in math and science. Dreier has co-authored legislative proposals to improve early STEM education through initiatives such as:

  • Expanding Advanced Placement (AP) courses in math and science, so that high-school students get a solid foundation for college STEM programs.
  • Recruiting STEM professionals to serve as adjunct teachers, so that students are taught by individuals who are experienced and well-qualified.
  • Establishing comprehensive teacher preparation programs to help cultivate students’ interest in STEM fields at an early age, and encourage students to pursue these interests from elementary school through college.

Congressman Dreier will continue to fight to ensure that our nation’s schools and institutions of higher learning are able to empower America’s students to succeed in careers that allow them to innovate, grow our economy and develop the next generation of technological advances.
