Washington, DC --- Today U.S. Representative Heath Shuler congratulated Ira B. Jones Elementary School in Asheville, NC for being named a finalist in First Lady Michelle Obama’s national Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition for their “Tuscan Smoked Turkey & Bean Soup” recipe.
“Establishing good nutrition habits at an early age puts our children on the path to success and a healthy lifestyle,” said Rep. Heath Shuler. “I applaud the students and teachers of Ira B. Jones Elementary for their commitment to healthy eating and creativity in developing a nutritious, low-cost, and kid-friendly recipe that schools across the country can include in their meal plans. They have made Western North Carolina proud, and I wish them luck as they go on to compete for the grand prize.”
Ira B. Jones Elementary was awarded first place in the “Dry Beans and Peas” category. Finalists from each of the three categories (Whole Grains, Dark Green and Orange Vegetables, and Dry Beans and Peas) will compete for the grand prize at a national cook-off event during the American Culinary Federation National Convention in Dallas Texas on July 25. The top 10 recipes in each category will be published in a children’s healthy eating cookbook.
