Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Representative Heath Shuler today announced that the Hendersonville Fire Department has secured a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This $506,000 grant will be used to hire 7 firefighters.
“This grant is excellent news for first responders in Hendersonville and the community they serve and protect,” said Rep. Shuler. “Now more than ever, we must ensure that first responders have the equipment, training, and resources they need to stay on the job keeping our neighbors safe. This funding will enable the Hendersonville Fire Department is able to continue their outstanding service to the local community.”
SAFER grants help fire departments across the country recruit, hire, and retain firefighters and first responders. The goal of the SAFER grant program is to provide local first responders with the ability to maintain 24-hour staffing to ensure their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
“Like fire departments across the country, the Hendersonville Fire Department is facing difficult budget challenges that threaten our ability to operate effectively,” said Hendersonville Captain Joseph Drake. “I am extremely grateful to Congressman Shuler and his office for their leadership in assisting us with this grant. This much-needed funding will allow us to hire the essential personnel we need to be successful and protect our community.”
