Washington, DC – Last week, Rep. Heath Shuler (D-Waynesville) urged Mr. Wallace Tyson, the Disabled American Veterans National Officer based in Raleigh, to fill the currently vacant position of Veterans Service Officer (VSO) at the Charles George Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Asheville.
In a letter to Tyson, Rep. Shuler stated, “We have a responsibility to our veterans to honor their sacrifices for our country. The VSO position is integral that they receive the best possible service and treatment at the Medical Center. I urge you to fill it as soon as possible.”
Veterans Service Officers work to guide veterans who have not applied for benefits through the process, from start to finish. They are fulltime employees who have been specially trained through the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs. While several volunteers share some of their time with the Charles George facility helping veterans with applications, the full-time, paid position is unoccupied.
“My office works in close partnership with Veterans Service Officers throughout Western North Carolina, as well as the committed employees and volunteers at our region’s VA medical centers,” said Rep. Shuler. “Navigating the process of applying for and receiving veterans benefits can be challenging, and we work tirelessly to help our veterans get the benefits they earned and deserve. We look forward to welcoming a fulltime Veterans Affairs/Disabled American Veterans Service Officer at the Charles George VA Medical Center, and I hope Mr. Tyson heeds my request to fill this position as quickly as possible.”
